Compress images and reduce their file size
Large photos slow down websites, fill mailboxes and exceed upload limits. With this tool you can compress image files such as JPG, PNG and WebP: choose the quality and, if you like, a maximum width in pixels, and the picture is re-encoded to a much smaller file. Up to 20 images can be handled per run.
A quality of about 75 is a good starting point to compress image files for the web: the difference is barely visible, but the file is often a fraction of the original. A maximum width helps with huge camera photos, because a picture of 6000 pixels is rarely needed on a screen. You see the size before and after, so you can judge the result. Use it whenever you need to compress image files before an upload.
If a picture cannot be made smaller, the original is kept. Compressing re-encodes the picture, so hidden information such as the shooting location, camera model and time (EXIF) is not carried over into the smaller file; our metadata tool removes it without re-encoding if that is all you need. All images are processed on servers in Germany, held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour. You can compress image files without signing up.
How it works
Add your images
JPG, PNG or WebP – one or several at once.
Set the quality
Lower quality means a smaller file. You can also limit the width.
Download
Download the smaller images, as a ZIP if there are several.
Questions and answers
How much smaller will my images get?
That depends on the image. Photos usually shrink a lot, while images that are already optimized may stay the same. If a file would not get smaller, we keep the original.
Is PNG compression lossy?
No. PNG files are re-packed without any loss of quality, so the savings are smaller than for JPG.
Can I reduce the dimensions as well?
Yes. Enter a maximum width in pixels; smaller images are never enlarged.
How do I compress images for a website?
Set the quality and maximum width, for example 1600 pixels; the files get much smaller. For even smaller files also convert the images to WebP.
