Validate e-invoices: XRechnung & ZUGFeRD

Upload an XML invoice (XRechnung, UBL or CII) or a ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDF. We check it against the official rules of the German e-invoicing standard and show every problem in plain view – before your customer or the tax office finds it.

Validate e-invoice files: XRechnung and ZUGFeRD

Since 2025 German businesses must be able to receive electronic invoices, and sending them becomes mandatory step by step. Before you pay or file an invoice, you should validate e-invoice files against the official rules. This tool checks XRechnung (UBL and CII) and ZUGFeRD or Factur-X PDF invoices and shows a clear report with the exact rule and location of every error. Use it whenever you must validate e-invoice data from a supplier.

To validate e-invoice data we use the open-source validator of the KoSIT, together with the current XRechnung rules, in its own container on our servers in Germany. For ZUGFeRD PDFs the embedded XML is extracted and checked, and the PDF itself is tested for PDF/A-3. You see the invoice number, parties, totals and the profile that was detected.

A valid result means the invoice meets the formal rules; it does not replace a check of the content. If your invoice has errors, the report tells you what to correct in your accounting software, and you can validate e-invoice files again in seconds. Guests can validate one invoice per day, with a free account you can validate several at once. Files are held in memory only and deleted after the check.

How it works

  1. Add your invoice

An XML file (XRechnung, ZUGFeRD XML) or a ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDF.

  2. We check it

XML schema, the European standard EN 16931 and the German XRechnung rules, using the official KoSIT validator.

  3. Read the report

See what is valid, which rules are broken and where – print it or download it as JSON.

Questions and answers

What is checked?

The invoice is checked against the XML schema (UBL or CII), the business rules of the European standard EN 16931 and – for XRechnung – the German CIUS rules. For this we use the official validator of the Koordinierungsstelle für IT-Standards (KoSIT) with the current XRechnung 3.0.2 rule set.

Which formats are supported?

XRechnung (UBL and CII, including Extension) and EN 16931 invoices as XML, and ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDFs that contain such an XML file – profiles XRECHNUNG, EN 16931 and BASIC. The profiles MINIMUM, BASIC WL and EXTENDED are not validated here.

Does a valid result mean the invoice is correct for tax purposes?

No. The check covers form, calculation rules and mandatory fields. It does not review the content for tax or legal correctness, and it does not replace advice from your tax advisor.

Is the PDF/A-3 standard checked as well?

Not yet. For ZUGFeRD PDFs we read the embedded invoice and tell you whether the PDF declares PDF/A-3, but we do not run a full PDF/A validation.

Is my invoice stored?

No. Your invoice is checked in memory on our servers in Germany. Nothing is written to disk, and everything is discarded as soon as you have your result.

Do I have to use e-invoices?

In Germany, businesses must be able to receive e-invoices since 1 January 2025. Issuing them becomes mandatory step by step – for larger businesses from 2027, for all businesses from 2028. Please confirm the details for your company with your tax advisor.

Can I check several invoices at once?

Yes, with a free account up to 20 invoices in one run (XML and PDF mixed). You get an overview and can open the full report for each invoice. Each invoice counts as one check.
