Not everyone uses the same office suite. Authorities and many companies work with OpenDocument files, while others expect Microsoft Office. This document converter turns text documents, spreadsheets and presentations from one family of formats into the other: DOCX to ODT, ODT to DOCX, XLSX to ODS, ODS to XLSX, PPTX to ODP and ODP to PPTX, plus RTF for plain exchange between text programs.

To use the document converter you add the files, choose the target format and download the result. The target has to match the kind of file: a text document can become DOCX, ODT or RTF, a spreadsheet XLSX or ODS and a presentation PPTX or ODP. Old binary formats such as DOC, XLS and PPT are accepted as input and come out in the modern format, which makes the document converter handy for old archives as well.

Text, tables, images and the usual formatting are carried over; macros and some special effects are not. Please look at the result before you send it on. The document converter runs LibreOffice on our own servers in Germany. Your files are held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour. If you only need a PDF, use our tools for Word, Excel or PowerPoint to PDF.

Questions and answers

Which conversions are possible?

Text documents (DOCX, DOC, ODT, RTF) to DOCX, ODT or RTF. Spreadsheets (XLSX, XLS, ODS) to XLSX or ODS. Presentations (PPTX, PPT, ODP) to PPTX or ODP. A document cannot be turned into a spreadsheet.

Will the layout stay the same?

Text, tables, images and most formatting are kept. Special fonts, complex layouts, macros and some effects can differ, so please check the result.

Are macros kept?

No. Macros are not carried over; the files contain only content and formatting.

How do I convert a Word document to the open ODT format?

Upload the DOCX file and choose ODT as the target. The tool also converts between RTF, ODS, XLSX, PPTX and ODP within the same document family.
