Convert PDF to text or Markdown
This tool turns PDF to text in reading order. You can choose plain text or Markdown. Markdown keeps headings, paragraphs and lists, which makes it ideal when you want to feed a document into an AI assistant, a note-taking app or a search index. Converting PDF to text is also handy for copying content without the layout.
Headings are recognised by font size, paragraphs by line spacing and lists by bullets and numbers. Tables and multi-column pages are not reconstructed, but the words stay in reading order. If you only need part of a document, enter the pages and convert only those from PDF to text. Up to 300 pages are supported per run.
A scanned PDF contains pictures instead of text, so there is nothing to read. In that case run our OCR tool first to make the PDF searchable, then convert PDF to text. All processing happens on servers in Germany. Your file is held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour.

Questions and answers
How good is the Markdown?
Headings come from the font size, paragraphs from the line spacing and lists from bullets and numbers. Tables and multi-column layouts are not recognised, the text stays in reading order.
My PDF is a scan and I get an error.
Scanned pages contain only pictures. First make the PDF searchable with “Make PDF searchable (OCR)”, then extract the text.
Is there a page limit?
Up to 300 pages per run. For longer documents choose the pages you need.
How do I turn a PDF into a Markdown file?
Choose the Markdown format; structure such as headings and lists is kept as far as possible. Plain text (TXT) works as well. Scanned PDFs need text recognition first.
