Image to text: read text from photos and screenshots

Often the words you need are trapped in a picture: a photographed letter, a screenshot, a scanned receipt or a slide. With this tool you can turn image to text in seconds. Upload JPG, PNG or WebP files and our OCR (optical character recognition) reads the printed words and gives you a plain text file that you can copy, edit and search. It is the quickest way to get image to text without typing anything.

If you want to keep the original look, choose the searchable PDF instead of plain text. The picture stays exactly as it is and an invisible text layer is added, so you can still search and select the text. It is a handy way to turn image to text for archives and for documents that must look unchanged. German and English texts are supported, also mixed within one picture.

For the best result use a sharp, straight photo with good light and printed text. Handwriting and very small print are recognised less reliably. The image to text conversion runs on our own servers in Germany with open-source software. Your file is held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour. If you start from a scanned PDF instead of a picture, use our PDF OCR tool.

How it works

  1. Add your images

Drop up to 10 JPG, PNG or WebP files onto the page or choose them from your device.

  2. Choose language and result

Pick German, English or both, and whether you want a text file or a searchable PDF.

  3. Download

Download the text or the searchable PDF. Several results come as a ZIP archive.

Questions and answers

How accurate is the text recognition?

Sharp, straight photos with printed text work best. Handwriting, very small text, strong shadows or low contrast are recognised less reliably, so please proofread the result.

Which languages are supported?

German and English, or both at once. Other languages are not available yet.

What is the difference between text and searchable PDF?

A text file contains only the words. A searchable PDF keeps the picture as it is and adds an invisible text layer, so you can search and copy from it.

Is my image stored?

No. It is processed in memory on our servers in Germany and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour.

Which image formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, AVIF and SVG. For TIFF and GIF the first page or frame is read. HEIC photos from iPhones are not supported yet.

How do I turn a photo of a document into text?

Upload the image, choose the language (German, English or both) and have a text file or a searchable PDF produced. Straight, sharp and well-lit photos give the best results.
