PDF to PDF/A: archive documents safely

Offices, courts and tax advisers often ask for PDF/A, the ISO standard for documents that have to stay readable for decades. A normal PDF may depend on fonts or colours that are not stored inside it. With PDF to PDF/A conversion, everything needed to display the page is embedded, so the document looks the same in thirty years. This tool does PDF to PDF/A in one step, also for Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Choose the level that your recipient asks for: PDF/A-1b is the oldest and most widely accepted, PDF/A-2b is the usual choice today, and PDF/A-3b also allows attachments such as the XML of an e-invoice. After the conversion we check the file with veraPDF, the reference validator, and show you whether the result conforms. That check is what sets this PDF to PDF/A tool apart from plain converters that only promise it.

Up to ten files can be converted per run, several results come as a ZIP archive. Everything runs on our own servers in Germany with LibreOffice, is held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour. If a file is password-protected, remove the password first with our unlock tool. For a quick PDF to PDF/A job before archiving, you only need a browser.

Which level should I choose?

PDF/A-2b is the usual choice. PDF/A-1b is the oldest and most widely accepted level. PDF/A-3b also allows embedded files, as used for e-invoices.

Is the result really checked?

Yes. After the conversion the file is checked with veraPDF, the reference validator for PDF/A. You see the result next to the download.

Can the layout change?

PDFs are re-processed by a conversion engine, so complex layouts can shift slightly. Check important documents before you archive them.

How do I create PDF/A and check it for conformance?

Choose the level 1b, 2b or 3b. We create the PDF/A and check the result against the chosen level with the veraPDF validator.
