Excel to CSV: export a sheet for any program

Many programs only import CSV files: online shops, newsletter tools, accounting software, CRM systems and databases. With this tool you can convert Excel to CSV without opening Excel. Upload an XLSX, XLS or ODS file and download every sheet as a clean CSV file that you can import elsewhere. It takes seconds to convert Excel to CSV for any import.

You decide how the file is written. Choose semicolon, comma or tab as the separator and a decimal comma or a decimal point for numbers. For German Excel and many German programs, semicolon with a decimal comma is the right choice. UTF-8 with BOM makes sure that umlauts are shown correctly when you open the file in Excel again after you convert Excel to CSV.

A CSV file contains values only: formulas are saved as the result shown in the sheet, and formatting such as colours is dropped. Up to ten files can be converted per run. Everything runs on our own servers in Germany with LibreOffice, is held in memory only and deleted after the download, at the latest after an hour. To go the other way, use our CSV to Excel tool. Questions and answers

Which sheet is exported?

By default all of them: a workbook with several sheets gives one CSV file per sheet, packed in a ZIP and named after the sheet. A workbook with one sheet gives a single CSV file. If you only want the first sheet, choose “First sheet only”.

Which options fit German Excel?

Semicolon as separator, decimal comma and UTF-8 with BOM: then Excel opens the CSV with columns, numbers and umlauts correct. Many import tools of other programs prefer a comma and a decimal point.

Are formulas kept?

No. A CSV file contains values only, so formulas are saved with their calculated result as shown in the sheet.

How do I save an Excel spreadsheet as CSV in UTF-8?

Choose UTF-8 (with or without BOM) as the character set and the delimiter you want: semicolon, comma or tab.

How do I export Excel as CSV for a data import?

Set the delimiter and decimal separator to match the target system. For many imports UTF-8 without BOM is the safer choice.
