Protect a PDF with a password
Contracts, payslips and customer data should not be readable by everyone who gets hold of the file. With this tool you can protect PDF documents with a password that is required to open them. The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strong standard used by current PDF software, when you protect PDF files here. It takes seconds to protect PDF files before you send them.
Choose a password with at least four characters, ideally a long phrase. Share it through another channel than the file itself, for example by phone or a messenger, because a password sent in the same email defeats the purpose. Anyone who wants to read the document must enter the password; without it the content cannot be opened.
Please remember the password: we do not store it and cannot recover it. A PDF that is already protected has to be unlocked first with our unlock tool. To protect PDF files we process them on servers in Germany, keep them in memory only and delete them after the download, at the latest after an hour. The password is never written to logs.

Questions and answers
How strong is the encryption?
The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method in the PDF standard.
What if I forget the password?
Then the PDF can no longer be opened. We do not know the password and cannot reset it.
Does the server see my password?
It is used only to encrypt this one job, never stored and never logged.
Can I protect an already protected PDF again?
First remove the protection with “Unlock PDF”, then protect the file with the new password.
How do I encrypt a PDF with a password before sending it by e-mail?
Choose a long password used only for this. The encryption uses AES-256. Give the password to the recipient by another route, not in the same e-mail.
