ViDA: e-invoicing goes European
The abbreviation ViDA stands for an EU reform of VAT. Among other things it brings mandatory e-invoices and digital reporting for cross-border transactions between businesses. Here is the overview as of October 2026.

What ViDA is
ViDA stands for “VAT in the Digital Age”. The EU wants to reduce tax fraud, simplify administration and align the rules for the single market. Part of it is the mandatory electronic invoice and timely digital reporting of transactions.
The key points
Under the framework agreed so far:
- From 2030 the e-invoice is to become mandatory for cross-border transactions between businesses within the EU, together with digital reporting of the transactions.
- Member states may introduce national e-invoicing obligations for domestic transactions without needing an exemption from the EU.
- National systems are to be aligned with the European requirements by a later date.
What it means for Germany
Germany has already introduced the e-invoice for domestic B2B transactions (receiving since 2025, issuing phased in until 2028). The European obligation for transactions with other EU countries comes on top later. In practice: anyone who relies on a standard according to EN 16931 today is well prepared for both developments.
What you can do now
You do not have to change anything immediately, but preparing pays off:
- Rely on formats according to EN 16931 (XRechnung, ZUGFeRD).
- Keep master data clean, including VAT identification numbers of business partners in other countries.
- Check whether your software will later support the digital reporting.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I have to change anything now because of ViDA?
- Not immediately. The European obligation for cross-border transactions is meant to apply later. Switching to EN 16931 helps in any case.
- Does the German e-invoicing obligation continue to apply?
- Yes. The German rules for domestic transactions apply independently of ViDA.
- Does ViDA affect private customers too?
- The e-invoicing obligation is aimed at transactions between businesses.
Try it now
Check an e-invoice in a few seconds. Your file stays in the memory of a server in Germany only and is deleted after one hour at the latest.
